The series of models below were drawn at SDSU to illustrate the roles that Information Systems can play. 

The many roles can be broadly arranged into two main categories: "Operational" and "Decision Support".

These are elaborated below.

"Local Automation", Accountability and Planning

Automated Communication with Customers

Enterprise-level Decision Support System ("DSS")

3. Evolutionary attempt to use existing local-automation systems for this. . .

4. Coordination of work processes and systems also leads to ability to integrate information coherently at enterprise level. . .
